Set Design
Big Walnut High School Theater Department
Concept: The idea behind Big Walnut's Footloose was to build the best set possible using materials and resources from previous shows, in a limited time frame of just a handful of weekends. During the set build, I was contracted to assist the director and students in building the world of Beaumont. Due to the musical having multiple locations that tell the story, I had to build a set that was flexible and easy to move on and off the stage.
Preacher’s House: The preacher’s house was built on a single 4x8 platform with a beautiful front porch, wooden siding, and an actual shingled roof. When you rotate the set piece 180 degrees, you are welcomed into the inside of the preachers kitchen.
Burger Blast: the Burger Blast Diner needed to be a simple set location, but it also needed a design element to make it pop! I designed and built a custom LED "NEON" Burger Blast sign, hidden on stage the entire run which was then deployed for the scene. The sign was completely DMX controlled by the theater lighting console. It took about 8 hours to wire the sign, and I designed 3D printed clips that were used to create the structure and design pattern to spell out the text.
Church Pews: These church pews were a labor of love. Previously built for another show for community theater, I built a second set of pews for the high school. The church pews are built from 2x12 and 2x10 boards that are 6 feet in length. I added furniture sliders to the bottoms so they could be silently and easily pushed on and off the stage without needing wheels and stage breaks, but they wouldn't cause damage the stage floor. Also, I build the pews with storage in mind, and they can be broken down quickly into 4 pieces just by removing a few screws.
